What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a protective cap that covers and restores damaged teeth. It can be made from tooth-colored materials for a natural look. Crowns are recommended for various tooth issues, including cracks, chips, stains, large fillings, root canals, worn-down teeth, and to support dental bridges. They also protect weak decayed teeth that cannot support fillings. With a dental crown, you can regain the strength and appearance of your teeth while preventing further damage.
Four Instances When Dental Crowns are Suggested to Patients
-
An afflicted or damaged tooth.
-
Patient is bothered by a discolored or deformed tooth.
-
Treatment of a cavity without sufficient urgency, leading to a too-large cavity for a filling.
-
Underwent a root canal procedure.
What are the Common Aspects of Crown Placement, and What Should you Expect?
Dental crowns usually require two appointments. In the first visit, we will examine the tooth and take x-rays. If there is decay or infection, a root canal may be recommended before placing the crown. Next, we will numb the area and remove any remaining decay. The tooth's surface is filed down for a proper fit and sizing of the crown. The amount of filing depends on the chosen materials for the crown. Overall, this process ensures a successful dental crown procedure with optimal results. Once the tooth has been prepared for a crown, a mold will be taken and sent to a lab for manufacturing. We will schedule another appointment in advance. This process usually takes around 2 weeks. Once the crown is ready, we will call you to confirm your appointment for crown placement. The procedure is generally simple, and we will administer local anesthetic to ensure comfort.
